Understanding AI Overviews in Search Results
AI overviews are short, AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of search engine results pages (SERPs). They aim to provide direct answers to user queries by pulling in information from multiple sources.
Which Search Engines Use AI Overviews?
Many search engines have begun implementing AI-generated summaries, but the most notable examples include:
- Google AI Overviews (formerly SGE) – Google first introduced AI-generated search summaries as part of its Search Generative Experience (SGE) in May 2023. By May 2024, the feature was rebranded as AI Overviews and rolled out to over 100 countries. These overviews aim to provide quick, authoritative answers based on various sources.
For more details, Google provides official documentation here: Google AI Overviews. - Microsoft Edge & Bing Chat – Microsoft has integrated AI-powered search through Bing Chat and Copilot. These tools provide real-time summarisation and even allow users to interact with the AI for deeper insights. Microsoft’s AI-powered search is deeply embedded into Edge, which means more users are exposed to AI-generated responses by default.
For more details, Microsoft provides official documentation here: Microsoft Copilot - DuckDuckGo AI Search – DuckDuckGo has also added AI-generated answers, though it offers an option to turn them off for users who prefer traditional results.
What about Mozilla Firefox? As of now, Firefox has not introduced AI-generated search results and remains focused on privacy-first browsing.
